Title: Tonga - Pacific Islands Rural and Agriculture Stimulus Facility (PIRAS) - June 2023
Description: Siuta Faha’ivalu, an employee of Nishi Trading, sorts squash at the Nishi warehouse.

Nishi Trading is a member of the Pacific Island Farmer Organisation (PIFON), which has received support from the IFAD- and EU-funded Farmers’ Organizations for Africa, Caribbean and Pacific (FO4ACP) programme. PIFON is the FO4ACP implementing partner in Tonga. After the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai (HTHH) underwater volcano eruption triggered a tsunami that devastated low-lying coastal areas, including on Tongatapu in January 2022, Nishi Trading received funding from FO4ACP to support small-scale cluster farmers that supply Nishi’s international market. These farmers are also supported by the IFAD-funded Tonga Rural Innovation Programme (TRIP II) and the Pacific Islands Rural and Agriculture Stimulus Facility (PIRAS).
These IFAD-supported programmes (FO4ACP, PIRAS, TRIP II) aim to increase the incomes and improve the livelihoods, food and nutrition security, and safety of smallholders and family farmers, with a primary focus on boosting farmers’ capacity to move beyond just their subsistence needs. Nishi Trading benefits from the consequent increased and improved supply of fresh produce, and is the only exporter in Tonga that links local production to the New Zealand, Australia, Korea and Japan markets.
