Title: Tajikistan - Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) - October 2023
Description:
Tursunoi Husainova, born in 1973, lives together with her husband and one of her daughters in Kuhdoman Village in the Dusti district of southwestern Tajikistan’s Khatlon Region. She was one of 24 women selected by CASP to participate in the women’s income generating group (WIGG) for dairy production. Each of the women received one purebred Holstein cow. The cows have proven to be well adapted to the local environment and, on average, produce four times more milk than the local bush cows – increasing from about two litres per day up to eight litres per day.

“It is good to have a cow. When I get up in the morning, I go to check on my her. I clean and milk her, the feed her. I boil the milk and make yogurt and hard yogurt balls. We also use the milk and yogurt to cook different meals, like porridge and our traditional national meal, qurutob. I get the dairy products, and I earn an income.”

Tursunoi uses the milk to make a variety of products, including hard yogurt balls, which she can sell in the market for 1 somoni each, or 70 somoni for one kilogram (or about US$6).

In addition to the cows, the local veterinarian received two purebred Holstein bulls, which he cares for and provides to the group members, and others in the community, for breeding. The veterinarian also works with the women to ensure that the cows are properly vaccinated and otherwise healthy.

The Community-based Agriculture Support Project (CASP) stimulates inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in rural Tajikistan. Its activities help communities and dehkan (smallholder) family farmers access productive infrastructure and services, leading to sustainable agricultural production, equitable income-generating opportunities, and improved living standards. CASP works with village organizations (VOs) to develop community-driven action plans that define their own improvement initiatives. Village-level participation in decision making is critical to the success of these plans and helps establish a sense of community ownership and cohesion.
