Title: Tanzania - Reversing Land Degradation trends and increasing Food Security in degraded ecosystems of semi-arid areas of Tanzania (LDFS) – July 2023
Description: Saumu, a young and inspiring seaweed farmer from Pemba Island, balancing family and entrepreneurship.

For the past two years, she has cultivated her own seaweed farm, allocated to her by the project. Though she recently, started seaweed farming, her family has been farming seaweed for generations.

With training on good agronomic practices from the project, her yields have increased. In her last harvest she got about 290 kilos earning her USD 100. With the money she was able to pay for her children's education, improve her home, and even purchase materials to build a new house.

Saumu's entrepreneurial spirit extends beyond seaweed. She actively participates in a group producing seaweed oil, showcasing her willingness to explore new ventures. Her artistic flair finds expression through henna painting, adding another income stream to her family.

Her message to the youth, especially young women “Do not just sit at home waiting for your husbands to help you, we need to look and take advantage of the opportunities in front of us like the seaweed farming that can benefit us and our families.”

Reversing Land Degradation Trends and Increasing Food Security in Degraded Ecosystems of Semi-arid Areas of Central Tanzania (LDFS) is one of 12 national projects under the Integrated Approach Pilot program on Fostering Sustainability and Resilience for Food Security in Sub-Saharan Africa (IAPFS). The project focuses on geographic areas with high levels of poverty, food insecurity, malnutrition of children under 5 years of age, as well as land degradation and average annual rainfall. Additionally, it addresses potential conflicts among communities related to access to and use of crop, grass, forest land, and water resources.
