Rufiad did not expect that the dried cocoa beans harvested from her father's garden would be priced so low. Driven by the desire to earn a better income, Rufiad joined a farmer's group, so she could learn how to effectively produce quality, high-priced cocoa beans. Her enthusiasm for learning 'flew' Rufiad from Goroatalo to MARS Cacao Academy in Tarengge, East Luwu, South Sulawesi, Indonesia following the Cacao Doctor program organized by ReadSi. Full of enthusiasm, Rufiad learned methods of land preparation, land cleaning, fertilization, pruning, sanitation and even making multi-clone seeds. "After coming home from here, I cut down all (the trees in the garden), because they were old, so they were no longer productive. I want to replant them with new seeds that are disease resistant," said the mother of one daughter. |
