Title: Tajikistan - Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) - October 2023
Description: A member of the Jafr Village Organization and one of the expert operators of the front loader machine in Jafr Village in north-eastern Tajikistan’s Rasht District. The CASP helped the Jafr Village Organization (VO) procure agricultural and construction machinery in 2020. The VO uses the front loader for village infrastructure maintenance and construction projects. For example, the front loader is used to clean the riverbed and shore up the banks of the small river that runs through Jafr Village following flash flooding in the summer of 2023.

The front loader the VO received has saved the community a significant amount of money. According to the VO Chief’s estimates, the VO now spends just 1 per cent of what it used to spend renting construction machinery. When the VO is not using the machinery for its own purposes, it rents out services to neighbouring communities as an income-generating activity to fund machinery maintenance and village infrastructure projects.

The Community-based Agriculture Support Project (CASP) stimulates inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in rural Tajikistan. Its activities help communities and dehkan (smallholder) family farmers access productive infrastructure and services, leading to sustainable agricultural production, equitable income-generating opportunities, and improved living standards. CASP works with village organizations (VOs) to develop community-driven action plans that define their own improvement initiatives. Village-level participation in decision making is critical to the success of these plans and helps establish a sense of community ownership and cohesion.
