Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: Verónica Calle Chuquichambi, 23, is a native authority of the Chojñacota community of the Aparu ayllu, located in the municipality of San Pedro de Totora in Oruro, Bolivia. On every launch of a new water pumping system powered by solar energy and the use of panels, she joins her community. This has been possible thanks to the PROCAMELIDOS project, which has been financed by IFAD and the Government of Bolivia..

"In the beginning it was very hard to believe. We've been told everything about these photovoltaic pumps. 'What are you going to find?' 'How are you going to find?' so we were told. But now they have seen where the water has gone down and where to find it," says Calle. With this technology, Veronica and her community have been able to extract water from springs that would otherwise be dry. The project has become a mainstay, providing water both for livestock, which includes mainly llamas and alpacas and, to a lesser extent, cows and sheep, and for human consumption. The implementation of this photovoltaic pump has transformed the way they access water, similar to the tap system in cities.
