Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: Photovoltaic systems enable the pumping of groundwater for human and camelid consumption. In the case of the Chojñacota community in the municipality of San Pedro de Totora in Oruro, Bolivia, one of the direct beneficiaries of this system, through the Pro-Camelid program financed by IFAD, was René Soto Vadillo, 43 years old. "Before, my parents lived in that water poverty. So, I didn't want to live in that condition where there is no water."

For a long time, René faced the challenge of water scarcity that affected his parents in the past. His life turned around when he learned about the Pro-Camelid project implemented in his community. He actively participated in workshops and courses provided by the project, acquiring essential knowledge. For decades he and his parents had to walk several kilometers to get water for their consumption and that of their llamas and alpacas. Although he considered moving to the city due to water shortages, he decided to stay in Chojñacota. Thanks to the photovoltaic system, he and other community members have water every day and their livestock also benefit from it, all of which has made a significant change in their lives. René expresses his gratitude to Pro-Camélidos and IFAD for their support.

The PROCAMELIDOS project is an initiative aimed to improve the living conditions of 25,000 families linked to the camelid value chain, while ensuring the sustainable management of natural resources in 30 municipalities in the highland area of Bolivia.
