Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: In 2023, Verónica Calle Chuquichambi was nominated and designated as the native authority of the Chojñacota community, belonging to the Aparu ayllu of the municipality of San Pedro de Totora in the department of Oruro, Bolivia. Reaching this position was not easy, especially in a society in which male leadership predominates and is prioritized. Her condition as a young woman could have been an obstacle; she overcame it with perseverance and her family support. The inherent difficulty of trusting someone young presents itself as a recurrent obstacle. The work becomes arduous, requiring special skills to coordinate and work effectively. In her interaction with community elders, she has had to employ carefully designed strategies to gain their respect. From the beginning, intense emotions have accompanied her experience; fear and grief were palpable feelings in the first meetings. In those first encounters, Veronica genuinely trembled, aware of the responsibility that comes with being an authority figure in the community. Despite the initial challenges, over time she has learned to navigate these waters with determination, implementing thoughtful actions and strategies to cultivate respect among the community members.
"It's difficult, they don't trust you when you are like this, young. It's been a little difficult to coordinate, but I've done it. With the elders I have had to coordinate, I have had to look for strategies to gain respect. At the beginning I was afraid, I felt sorry for them and in the meeting I had the first time I really trembled".

Veronica emerged as one of the outstanding beneficiaries of the IFAD-supported Pro-Camelids program. This program, designed to address the complexities rooted in the camelid producer sector, aims to reduce the challenges inherent in the primary production of llamas and alpacas in the Bolivian altiplano. Among the challenges faced by this program are low productivity and the limited availability of pasture and water. The lack of added value in the raw material must also be counteracted. Among the obstacles identified at the outset were poor processing and marketing, as well as the lack of technical assistance and limited access to markets and financial services. With the support of this program, Verónica becomes a living testimony of the positive transformation that strategic intervention in the camelid production sector can bring about. This program, which not only seeks to overcome these tangible difficulties, but also to foster a more cohesive environment in which the various actors in the camelid production complex can interact more effectively.
