Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: Llama fiber is used to make clothing and also to make blankets and blankets or rugs to get out of bed. However, in most cases, the main benefit for llama breeders lies in the sale of live specimens and also in the commercialization of the animal's meat. Verónica Calle Chuquichambi, leader of the Chojñacota community in the municipality of San Pedro de Totora in Oruro, Bolivia, has approximately 25 of her own llamas grazing on a family farm, a task she shares with her uncles. In this family cycle, the responsibility is rotated month by month, and in this exchange arises the need for a shed to take care of their livestock. "The llama, we mostly sell at the age of three at a good price," he says.

As a solution to their needs, Pro-Camelids, a program in place since 2016 in Bolivia, has implemented more than 10,500 productive infrastructures to cope with climate change. These structures, deployed for various purposes, range from sheltering livestock from climatic onslaughts, emplaced as sheds, to activities such as fertilization, cultivation and storage of fodder. It also focuses on the management and conservation of native grasslands and wetlands, contributing to the integral improvement of water availability. Each action carried out under this program is a pillar in the construction of a more robust and sustainable environment for the communities linked to the camelid complex in western Bolivia.
