Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: Verónica Calle Chuquichambi is one of the beneficiaries of the Pro-Camelids program, through which she was able to build a shed for her livestock, mainly llamas. The sale of these animals has become an economic ritual for Verónica, her family and all the families in the Chojñacota community of the Aparu ayllu in Oruro, Bolivia. It is a vital means of subsistence in their environment. It is not only about marketing the animals, but also about taking advantage of other resources. The wool, with its own shearing ceremony, and the meat that serves for different preparations in the diet of the people of this part of the country. The sales process unfolds both in the village, where some buyers require certain documents, and at local fairs, either in Curahuara or Totora.

Pro-Camelidos is possible thanks to IFAD's support, and its assistance enables peasant and indigenous populations in 47 municipalities in western Bolivia, such as San Pedro de Totora, where Verónica is from, to access benefits such as sheds and photovoltaic plants to guarantee water for raising their animals. "Before we didn't have a project, the llamas sometimes froze because of the cold. Now, with the shed, they are better off," says Veronica. Facing the challenges rooted in the camelid producers' sector, the Program stands as a beacon of solutions aimed at mitigating the adversities in primary production. These challenges, ranging from low productivity to limited availability of pasture and water, are exacerbated by the deterioration of natural resources and climate change. The expansion of the quinoa agricultural frontier, the low value added of the raw material and insufficient access to services such as veterinary services and inputs contribute to a complex and challenging panorama.
