Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: Mario Mollo Mamani, president of the Chojñacota community education board (San Pedro de Totora, Oruro), carries, with Verónica Calle Chuquichambi, a bucket of water containing freshly slaughtered alpaca meat. Whether it is an important event or an ordinary day, llama and alpaca meat is key to the diet and economy of inhabitants of places like the municipality of San Pedro de Totora in Bolivia's altiplano region. Verónica was the beneficiary of a project to build sheds for her llamas and alpacas, while Mario, indirectly, was also benefited by the construction of a subway water pumping system to supply the livestock.
"In the ayllu (common place for indigenous people) they live mostly from livestock, they sell, we sell," Calle explains. In the core of the Aparu de Chojñacota ayllu, the essence of life lies in livestock, where the alpaca and llama are not only animals, but also fundamental suppliers of the meat that feeds the community and external markets and also of the wool to make clothes. Here, the trade and consumption of this meat is an ingrained practice that sustains daily life. Both Mario and Verónica are aware that it is necessary to promote this way of life and, to do so, they must seek to improve.

The Program for Integral Strengthening of the Camelid Complex in the Bolivian Altiplano (Pro-Camelidos) seeks to improve the living conditions of families linked to the camelid complex and increase livestock productivity. This program, under sustainable natural resource management, is implemented in municipalities in La Paz, Oruro and Potosí. In 2016, the Plurinational State of Bolivia and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) signed an Agreement to finance Pro-Camelids, aimed at promoting rural development, reducing food insecurity, addressing vulnerability and eradicating poverty. Over the past six years, the Bolivian government has promoted improved living conditions for families associated with the camelid complex, implementing actions that strengthen livestock productivity and are resilient to climate change.
