Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: Llama “charque” (dehydrated meat) is one of the main products crafted in the meat processing plant in the municipality of Turco, Oruro, Bolivia. Just over 10 years ago, camelid producers joined forces to establish their plant. Part of the infrastructure of this plant comprises nine tents for drying llama meat. The women in charge of this venture were beneficiaries of the Pro-Camelids program, with financial support from IFAD, to enhance their work equipment and refine the infrastructure they initially had.

Agustina's story focuses on the positive transformation of dietary choices towards healthier options. Previously, concerns about high cholesterol and fats were evident, but with changes in eating habits, these issues have significantly decreased. Llama meat has become a valuable choice as it is low in cholesterol and fat, offering health benefits due to its protein and vitamin content. Agustina and her family have grown to appreciate llama meat more, especially for its nutritional properties. The introduction of products like llama jerky and sausages has been well-received, adapting to customer preferences. Agustina continually learns and improves her products, adjusting them based on customer feedback to achieve a perfect balance of taste and health in their food.
