Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: Roberta Rivera Mollo, 33 years old, and Zenayda Marca Quenaya, 29, use vacuum packaging machines for charque as a snack. Llama charque is characterized by being a dry, pounded, and slightly salted meat that has a considerable shelf life. Currently, Roberta and her colleagues manage their own spaces in the markets, representing a valuable source of income. Roberta is primarily dedicated to charque production, delivering around seventy to a hundred kilos monthly to her clientele. In addition to her involvement in the production plant, her main focus is on charque, making it her primary area of work. Cochabamba is her main market, constituting an essential part of her business.

Through the Pro-Camelids program, with financial support from IFAD, the Association of Agro-Livestock Producers of Turco (APAT) in Oruro, Bolivia, was able to improve the conditions of its llama meat processing plant, as well as acquire better equipment and machinery. In this place, not only charque is produced but also sausages, bologna, and even hamburgers from this animal.
