Title: Tajikistan - Community-based Agricultural Support Project (CASP) - October 2023
Description:
Raikhana RAHMONOVA, Women’s Income Generating Group (WIGG) for poultry, Mohinov Village, Dusti

Raikhana Rahmonova was born in 1989. She lives together with her husband and four children in Mohinov Village in the Dusti district of southwestern Tajikistan’s Khatlon Region. Raikhana’s husband used to emigrate to Russia in search of work, spending much of his time away from home. But since she received turkeys from CASP, Raikhana has a new livelihood and life has changed for her family.

As a member of the Women’s Income Generating Group (WIGG) for poultry production established by CASP, Raikhana received eight turkeys, which she raised. In the spring, they lay a lot of eggs, many of which Raikhana hatches. She raises and sells the turkeys, as well as eggs. Using the money she makes from the turkeys, Raikhana was even able to buy a lamb.

“You know, it's life and we need things. I bought school clothes for my children. And we have food security. We sell and we buy what we need, and we also eat the turkeys ourselves. We are much better off now.”

The Community-based Agriculture Support Project (CASP) stimulates inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in rural Tajikistan. Its activities help communities and dehkan (smallholder) family farmers access productive infrastructure and services, leading to sustainable agricultural production, equitable income-generating opportunities, and improved living standards. CASP works with village organizations (VOs) to develop community-driven action plans that define their own improvement initiatives. Village-level participation in decision making is critical to the success of these plans and helps establish a sense of community ownership and cohesion.
