Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: Part of the charque (dehydrated llama meat) packaging process involves measuring the exact amount to be included in the bags that will later be offered for sale. Roberta Rivera Mollo and Zenayda Marca Quenaya, are partners in the Association of Agro-Livestock Producers of Turco (APAT), and they have a role to play in the packaging room of their Llama Meat Transformation Plant in the municipality of Turco in the Andean region of Bolivia. "In the past, men were always the ones working, but nowadays, we have this job. We contribute, too. Our husbands help us, but not much; mostly, women are always making charque," explains Roberta.

Over the past six years, the Bolivian government has been promoting a project aimed at improving the living conditions of families linked to the camelid complex, with a special emphasis on increasing livestock productivity and implementing climate-resilient actions. This program aims to address various challenges and difficulties in the primary production of the camelid producers' sector. These challenges include low productivity, quality, and yield; inadequate livestock management; limited availability of pasture and water due to the deterioration of natural resources and climate change; the expansion of quinoa agriculture; the limited added value of raw materials; and insufficient access to services such as veterinary care and inputs. Additionally, in the processes of transformation and commercialization, issues such as lack of technical assistance, high production costs, weaknesses in market access, lack of access to financial services, and insufficient collaboration among different actors in the production chain have been identified.
