Title: Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023
Description: Elsa Chambi Ramirez frequently accompanies her husband, Tiburcio Marca Aguilar, to perform tasks in the areas where their llamas and alpacas graze. One morning in October 2023, they went together to their fields to clear the water passage, shovel in hand, in areas that had been obstructed by earth patches or were beginning to salinize too much. This family, living in Cosapa, in the Turco municipality in Oruro, consists of seven members—Tiburcio, Elsa, four sons, and a daughter. All are dedicated in one way or another to the breeding of llamas and alpacas. The Marca Chambi family is a beneficiary of one of the components of the Pro-Camélidos program, funded by IFAD, which involves the construction of a shed for their animals. The completed structure is already in use.

The purpose of Pro-Camélidos is to contribute to improving the living conditions of families linked to the camelid complex, as well as increasing livestock productivity through sustainable management of natural resources in La Paz, Oruro, and Potosí municipalities. The program aims to strengthen and facilitate the target population's access to initiatives to improve primary production at the level of their family and communal productive units, focusing on proper management of natural resources and food security. Additionally, it aims to strengthen families and economic/production organizations to generate infrastructure conditions that drive private investments, improve their transformation processes, create added value, and enable competitive access to the camelid production complex.
