Title: | Bolivia - Integral Strengthening Programme for the Camelid Value Chain in the Bolivian High Plateau (Pro-Camélidos) - October 2023 |
Description: |
Elsa Chambi Ramires and her daughter graze three alpacas on their property "Tholatia" in the Cosapa community of the Oruro municipality of Turco in Bolivia. They take two "huacaya" or normal alpacas because of their constitution and circular shape. They also carry an alpaca of the "suri" or woolly type. These three animals are part of the camelid livestock that has given joy to the family of Tiburcio Marca Aguilar and his wife Elsa. Every year they make their best specimens participate in local and national fairs in which the quality of their fiber is rewarded, among the main details. The economy of many families in this high-altitude region of Bolivia is based on the breeding of llamas and alpacas, either to sell the animals "standing" or alive, or to commercialize their meat and fibers for the production of clothing. With the support of Pro-Camélidos, through the financial assistance of IFAD, families like Elsa's have benefited from the construction of sheds to shelter their animals from the threat of the freezing cold in this region and also from the constant stalking of foxes and pumas, which, in some cases, attack the offspring of llamas and alpacas, directly affecting the economy of these families. |
